Fire Inspections

Bill Petri is the Madison Fire Department Fire Prevention Officer assigned to the campus. He inspects all campus buildings once every six months.BillFire Door Sign is also available to answer any fire prevention questions on new construction, remodel, evacuation, etc. The codes enforced are the Wisconsin Administrative Codes the Department of Commerce section. The Administrative Codes have also adopted some of the NFPA codes and OSHA codes.

Below are some of the more frequently written violations. If you have any of these violations in your area please correct them immediately.

  • Extension cords must not be used for permanent wiring.

  • Yellow "Laboratory Emergency Information" placards must be filled out completely and accurately and located on every entrance to a laboratory.

  • No storage is allowed in stairwells.

  • Exit corridors and passageways must have a least a 4 feet clearance.

  • Fire doors shall be kept in the closed position or held open by an approved device.

  • All compressed gas cylinders must be secured.

  • Fire extinguishers and fire department connections must not be obstructed or obscured from view.

  • All refrigerators, freezers, and coolers shall be labeled to indicate if it is or is not suitable for flammables.
