Shipping Hazardous Materials Safely
UW-Madison Chemical & Radiation Protection
The UW-Madison Chemical & Environmental Safety Program provides
training and certification for shipping and receiving of hazardous materials.
Training topics include: How to recognize hazardous materials, safe receipt and
handling of hazardous materials, preventing and preparing for a hazardous
material spill and become familiar with the requirements associated with
preparing hazardous materials for transport. The U.S. Department of
Transportation requires that all persons involved in shipping hazardous
materials must be trained and certified in proper handling of these materials.
Who must attend this training?
- Hazardous Materials Transportation Coordinators
designated by UW-Madison departments and divisions
- People who work in receiving areas and loading docks
where hazardous materials are handled
- For people who prepare hazardous materials for
shipment, this training will certify you to prepare and offer a
hazardous material for shipment.
We also recommend training for people who sign for, open and
unpack packages of hazardous materials.
Please contact the Safety Department if you load or operate a
vehicle used to transport hazardous materials. You are required to receive
special training.
