A general process to determine training needs (text version of Chemical Waste Training Figure 1)

  1. Background information
    1. What part of the work is related to chemical waste?
    2. What regulations apply to the work?
    3. What records need to be kept?
  2. Content determination
    1. Is the work covered by a standard operating procedure (SOP)?
      1. If yes, does the SOP inherently comply with the regulations identified above?
        1. If yes, train on SOP, not on regulations.
        2. If no, worker needs basic chemical waste training.
      2. If no, worker needs to know regulations.
    2. Does the worker keep records?
      1. If yes, worker needs record-keeping training.
      2. If no, record-keeping training is not needed.
  3. What about workplace safety?
    1. Is the work being done safely?
      1. If yes, there is no problem.
      2. If no, is the worker covered by OSHA or an OSHA state plan?
        1. If yes, refer to OSHA or state.
        2. If no, there is a dilemma. See text immediately below flow chart.
