AHW
Acute Hazardous Waste, sometimes called P list waste. Chemical wastes listed in 40 CFR 261.33(e). Also includes six F-list wastes in 40 CFR 261.31(a) that are rare in laboratories.
CESQG
Conditionally Exempt Small Quantity Generator (“seesqueegee” in EPA jargon.) Generates less than 100 kg of hazardous waste and less than 1 kg of AHW per calendar month. Subject to fewest regulations.
EH&S
Environmental Health and Safety, the name for the service unit that commonly includes chemical waste management.
EPA
The United States Environmental Protection Agency, the federal agency that writes and enforces RCRA regulations and oversees state programs. In addition to its Washington, DC headquarters, EPA divides the U.S. is divided into ten regions. Each has a regional office that has considerable autonomy in regulatory interpretations and enforcement practices.
LQG
Large Quantity Generator. Generates more than 1,000 kg of hazardous waste and/or more than 1 kg of AHW per calendar month. Subject to the most stringent RCRA regulations.
OSHA
The United States Occupational Safety and Health Administration. It may also refer to a state agency enforcing OSHA rules under a state plan.
RCRA
The Resource Conservation and Recovery Act, the federal law that enables hazardous waste regulations.
SAA
Satellite Accumulation Area, a place to put chemical waste before it is moved to a central facility.
SQG
Small Quantity Generator (“squeegee” in EPA jargon.) Generates 100—1,000 kg of hazardous waste and less than 1 kg of AHW per calendar month. Intermediate level of regulation.
