Photo of Dave Drummond Dave Drummond recently retired from the University of Wisconsin–Madison Division of Facilities Planning and Management. For fifteen years, he was director of the Safety Department at the university, consistently one of the five largest research universities in the nation. The Safety Department has a staff of forty with broad responsibilities for environment, health and safety on the campus. Dave has more than thirty years of university experience as faculty, professional and manager. He has a Bachelor’s degree in Biology from the California Institute of Technology and a Master’s and Ph.D. degree in Environmental Health from the University of Minnesota, where he was a NASA fellow in the School of Public Health. He is a Certified Industrial Hygienist.

Early in his career, Dave worked in the spacecraft sterilization program at Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, Calif. Following graduate school he was a researcher at the Yale University School of Public Health. He served as assistant professor of civil engineering and director of the Public Health Program at Tufts University for seven years. Before coming to Wisconsin, he served the University of Iowa Health Protection Office for ten years as industrial hygienist and hands-on hazardous waste manager.

Dave has served on the executive committee of CSHEMA (Campus Safety, Health and Environmental Management Association), formerly a division of the National Safety Council and currently manages the CSHEMA-L electronic discussion list. He is an experienced program reviewer and is involved in national efforts to develop program review guidelines and best practices for Environmental Health and Safety programs for colleges and universities. In his field, he has published fourteen articles, authored commercial computer software marketed by the National Safety Council and hosted national and international conferences on campus safety. In 2004 Dave received the Distinguished Service to Safety Award, the highest award granted to an individual by the National Safety Council.

Dave is also active in his community. He recently co-chaired the committee that guided development of a new 4.5 mile bicycle path in Madison and has served a variety of roles in the Rotary Club of Madison where he has received the Four Avenues of Service Citation and is a Paul Harris Fellow. He is married to Joy Drummond and they have three grown children. Their family has hosted more than 25 exchange students from around the world through Rotary Youth Exchange and other programs. His hobbies include bicycling, astronomy, sports car driving and auto repair.
